Poetry Friday, Week 32: From the Poetry Pop-up Salon

8/15/2025

Picture
Heidi at my juicy little universe is hosting this week and is sharing poetry news.
Last Saturday morning I hosted a Poetry Pop-Up Salon for poets to gather and write for a short amount of time.  It's a great way to generate a wee amount of work and just noodle with poetry plus the bonus of being in community.  Today I'm sharing my very rough drafts from the two invitation prompts  I used: harvest and the phrase soaked with the moon from "Jack and the Moon" in Marie Howe's latest book,  New and Selected Poems.  We typically write for about 20 minutes and share.  It is so interesting to see how each writer uses the prompt.

My doodly and scribbly writing in my notebook.
Prompt: Harvest-FIre-Key

When the moon is full
Harvest begins

At night, the sneaps, the turnips,
are at their fullest

Gran tell me
it’s key for the highest nutrients

At home, a kettle boils water
over the wood fire

Plop, plop, plop,
Tiny moons into the pot

When the moon is full
Harvest begins

For the following prompt, I love playing with golden shovels. Of late, I've been thinking about time, time folding, and time travel. Thus the following draft, a triple golden shovel.

Prompt: soaked with the moon from "Jack and the Moon"
I.
On the mesa, a woman soaked
her clothing in a wooden tub with
Sage and mugwort. The
tincture for solving disputes on a full moon

II.
Midnight tides soaked
us, drenched us with
seaweed strands. We wore them like the
selkies and danced under the full moon

III.
Time particles soaked
with
filaments of sandstone and sea salt. The
Amalgamation of time travel under the full moon

OUESTION:
Would you be more likely to join a Poetry Pop Up on a weeknight for an hour-ish time to write and talk? Or are Saturday mornings better? Or does it matter?

Jone, what fun you had with these prompts. A triple golden shovel is neat. I had never heard of that. It's interesting to see what you did with it--the three stanzas so different.

I have missed each of the writing times you have hosted, but I would love to try to get there sometime. Saturday mornings are typically available for me. Most evenings work too, and like you, I'm on PT, so it's never too late for us.

Jone, I am never sure what day of the week would be the best for the Poetry Pop-Up Salon but I am sure that I would like to be a part of the group. Your golden shovel is very interesting as a triple decker. While I did not know what a selkie is I thought it might be a figure from mythology. Your prompt on harvest flows quite nicely. Happy Writing.

Hi, Jone--I'm sorry I didn't make the pop-up as I planned. My mom has had shingles and I've been over there often trying to keep track of her condition. Sounds like I missed a good one! I love your golden triptych! the 2nd especially--every word perfect-- took me far away from here and now. I think in the future evenings are better--I'm toying with Saturday morning workshops for kids in my studio for the fall.

Jone, I love the idea of a triple golden shovel, and you have done something marvelous with this one.

I had a ball! Thanks for organizing! I like the tiny moons in the pot, and you know I like a bit of Gaidhlig in there!

What a simply wonderful idea, Jone. I absoluteely love it. I think Saturday morning would draw a slightly different group compared to a weekday. Maybe try both...
Your resultant poems and the notebook entries provide rich evidence of the creative buzz your initiative sparked. Well done you!

A triple golden shovel is a fantastic idea! I love how yours are so different. I will try to make it to one of your poetry salons - they sound like so much fun. Hard to say which day is better.

Jone, the fruits of your latest pop-up are abundant, like the rich harvest you wrote about. :) I love the idea of a triple golden shovel! I don't think I've ever seen that before.

I’m always blown away by what bubbles up in a salon session. I think it’s Jone-magic. Thanks for hosting. I love it.
