Thanks to Karen at Karen Edmisten* for hosting Poetry Friday this week. She is sharing an Ellen Bass poem that had me at "the smell of grated ginger."
This week, I subbed for in a fifth grade class for my friend who was a teacher librarian and was moved into the classroom as a result of the district getting rid of the library positions. She has a fabulous class. She left me a Joyce Sidman unit of poetry for the week. So I read:
When In Doubt When in doubt. take a nap. Even at 10 in the morning. When in doubt eat the dark chocolate stashed in the drawer labeled “when in doubt”. When in doubt go outside at night. Look for the newest stars. Name them. When in doubt reread letters you’ve saved in a box. It’s your history. When in doubt talk to the neighborhood crow. The one who brings you trinkets. When in doubt drive to the coast. Count the waves. When in doubt sip tea at your local tea shop. Read the tea leaves. When in doubt text your friends. Let them know they’re loved. © Jone Rush MacCulloch The class wrote poems in response to Night Emperor and This is Just to Say. In the Padlet, you will also see my "This is Just to Say" poem, regarding teaching fractions in math this week. I am so hopeless in teaching math!!

In addition to showing those students that poetry can be so personal, you've shown them a way to bring solace to their lives, Jone, just as those Wed. solace photos you post. I imagine they will always remember, "When in doubt. .." - "when needed"!

Wow! Your "When in doubt" really got me. Yes to all of these things! And I'm also stricken by the fact that they've gotten rid of library positions. This makes me heartbroken. I know that happened in my cousin's school in Georgia as well. They had a library with no one as librarian. I just can't imagine this and yet I know it's happening all over.

Jone, while in NY as an administrator, I always advocated for the librarians to continue as the keepers of books, deliverers of knowledge, and the librarian in charge of the library. It is sad that some districts and their boards think that taking a librarian from her original job and placed in a classroom makes for a right decision. The library has always been he hub of a school. Thanks for your students' poems. Each one was different, some funny, and all enjoyable. Kudos to the children and you their weeklong teacher. It must have been so much fun.

When in doubt, close your eyes and re-visit 5th grade. Remember what it was like to be a kid, one of other kids who was in a row of desks. We took care of each other. We swapped gifts at holiday time. We didn't know who was rich or poor. We just were learning and growing together.

"When in doubt," read poetry. Especially fresh, funny, thoughtful poems from students and adventurous substitute teachers. <3

I love your "When In Doubt" poem! My only tiny edit might be to refer to the crow as a WHO rather than a THAT.
