The universe gained another star this week. I love glimmering stars but honestly, I think there have been enough people to reach the stars this year.

I don’t remember if it was the Highlights Foundation or Georgia Heard’s workshop during Covid in which I met Beth Brody. Something connected with us and I had the good fortune to talk poetry, take more workshops, and share poetry for feedback with her over the last five to six years.

This past year a quartet of us had met via Zoom to talk poetry about every six weeks. It was apparent that Beth was struggling with an undetermined health issue. This fall, the diagnosis of lymphoma was given and Beth was on her way with chemotherapy treatments.

In my text over the weekend, we talked about a David Baker class that she’d signed for and the importance of not overdoing. So it was a shock to hear from her dear husband, Bob, that she had passed away on Monday.

I will miss her. She was the queen of poetry punctuation and line breaks. I learned so much from her. She was so encouraging and funny.  When she shared the diagnosis and treatment, she wrote she would emerge with the daffodils. I will be waiting for my daffodils to emerge this year.

I plan on holding a poetry gathering via Zoom to honor her. You’re invited.

I love the haibun form.  This year I had two accepted into the Portland Haiku Society chapter's anthology.
Crossing Bridges is a new haibun anthology by The Portland Haiku Group, edited by Shelley Baker-Gard and Shasta Hatter. Our anthology features haibun by ALXSw, Ellen Ankenbrock, Steve Bahr, Shelley Baker-Gard, Chandra Bales, John Budan, Terry Ann Carter, Maggie Chula, Lisa Gerlits, Shasta Hatter, Jone Rush MacCulloch, Cathy Merritt, James Rodriguez, David H. Rosen, Ce Rosenow, Diana Saltoon, Jacob D. Salzer, Marilyn Stablein, John Stevenson, Carolyn Winkler, and Johnny Baranski. Crossing Bridges was published by Lulu Press, Inc. in 2024, and also features artwork by Carolyn Winkler. Crossing Bridges is available to purchase on lulu.com for $15 USD.
The following haibun is one that I've been working on about a place from my childhood.

The Knolls
Late summer after fifth grade, my family moved.  Dad accepted a teaching position and we were having a house built. Grandma called our new location, “the god-forsaken valley.”

We had a six month wait as our house was built. Scouring the real estate ads in the newspaper, my parents found a cabin-like house. It was nestled among scrub oak, California lilac, and sumac, a change from manicured lawns. We moved in.

Definitely not built to code. I adored the house’s quirky ways. My bedroom closet was lined in cedar. I could walk in it and inhale its woodsiness. It was the enchanted forest I dreamt of many nights. Everyday, the bus would drop me off at the bottom of our dirt road driveway. It was the best adventure.

Mom felt otherwise. My brother and I tracked in dirt, leaves, and sometimes mud from playing outside. At night, coyotes howled. Often, my night emergency room nurse mother was greeted in the morning by our neighbor, a wizened tattooed lady, offering her a beer.

I guess I can see your mom's point of view, but I'm with you -- that cabin sounds like all kinds of magic!

Jone, thank you for sharing Beth with us. I didn't know her, but I will be looking for her amid my daffodils as well. I am loving the haibuns today - thanks for introducing us to this quirky cabin! xo

Oh, Jone... I knew and loved Beth from when she was a student at VCFA. Thank you so, so much for sharing her light here...

Jone, so sorry for the loss if your friend Beth. Your poem is a lovely tribute. Congratulations on the publication of your haibun poems. I adore the one that you shared here. Wow! It offers a personal insight into your childhood and a vivid snapshot of that time in your life. The idea of a “wizened tattooed lady” showing up at your door made me smile.

Jone, I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. She sounds wonderful! Hugs to you, and here's to no more new stars in the near future. Emerging with the daffodils--that will stay with me for a long time. xo

Oh, that cedar-lined room sounds like sheer indulgence. What a lovely memory. You really make the haibun form sing.

And, I'm sorry for your loss. I agree - enough with the new stars. It has been a year full of them, and I need some sun...

Jone, I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend. May her memory be a blessing.

I like your haibun so much! My favorite line is "Often, my night emergency room nurse mother was greeted in the morning by our neighbor, a wizened tattooed lady, offering her a beer." That made me laugh. I could picture the whole scene.

So sorry to hear about your friend Beth, you created a shining haiku for her!
Love your haibun, what an adventure, I feel as if I was there, thanks for sharing it, and congrats on your publications too!

Jone, I'm sure I met Beth at some point, but I can't bring her face to mind--how shocking, to be texting one moment and receiving awful news the next! She's so beloved by so many. Thanks for sharing your memories.
Congratulations on your published haibuns! I love knowing this story about your house "definitely not built to code." I'm excited to learn more about the haibun form. I've only written one before.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend, Beth. I never met her, but she sounds like a gem.

Jone, your simple haiku on a black background is full of hope. I also lost a dear friend but it was at the end of November. One good thing about evening stars is that they bring us closer to our deceased love ones. As stars and angels we have reminders. Your prose is a beautiful backstory filled with nostalgia.

Jone, I'm so sorry to hear about Beth's passing. Hugs to you and condolences on the loss of your friend. An inspiring woman!

Your haibun captures a lovely childhood vignette. Thank you!

Jone, I am so sorry for the loss of such an inspirational friend that you had in Beth. Lymphoma is tough - it is one of the cancers my dad is battling. Daffodils are my favorite spring flower and I will think of you and Beth when they rise in the spring. Thank you for being such a poetry advocate! Cabins are magical places - as is ours - I feel it everyday and am lucky to live in one. I have to revisit my one and only haibun from 2022. Thanks! Happy New Year.
