Poetry Friday, Week 8: Exquisite Corpse Poem and Poetry Postcards

2/24/2022

Tricia at The Miss Rumphius Effect
is hosting the Poetry Friday round up this week.

The Poetry Sisters came up with a challenge to write an Exquisite Corpse poem.  It is a collaborative effort.
You can read about it at Poets. org
I've been meeting with a small group of poets that shared some zoom classes.

We decided to play.  The result was two poems created in two different ways.   And second, we each wrote a line.  I coordinated the words and the lines by assigning names, pulling them out of a hat.  The results are as follows.  We had great fun.

Picture
First, we followed the recommendation list at Poets.org.
We decided on a ADJ-N-V-ADJ-N sequence.  Everyone go at least one adjective and one noun.

For the second one, each person was assigned a line and created the ADJ-N-V-ADJ-N sentence.

No one knew what the others had written until the end.

They sort of remind me of fever dreams.  I love the word choices in each.

Finally, here is the video I created with Canva Pro to share all the New Year Postcards. Such a fun learning curve.

If you want to see want I was up to this past weekend, visit Robyn Hood Black's blog.

Poetry Friday, Week 7: CYBILS WINNER for Poetry

I'm actually writing this a week before it will appear as I will be out of town next week.

Thanks to  Laura at Small Reads for Brighter Days for hosting us today.

I originally was going to post a video of the Poetry Swap for the New Year BUT I have discovered I need to figure out how to add the video to my blog in an easy way PLUS I am in Charleston to attend a wedding reception. So hopefully, maybe next week.

For today...

A Clock and Books

© Jone Rush MacCulloch
2022

Mixed media (photos, magazine, ink, napkin)

Created for Laura Shovan’s 10th Annual February Poetry Project: “Time”. This quote from Tom Robbins speaks to me:

“A book no more contains reality than a clock contains time. A book may measure so-called reality as a clock measures so-called time; a book may create an illusion of reality as a clock creates an illusion of time; a book may be real, just as a clock is real (both more real, perhaps, than those ideas to which they allude); but let's not kid ourselves - all a clock contains is wheels and springs and all a book contains is sentences.”
― Tom Robbins, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

As well as  this quote from Albert Einstein: “Time is relative.”
The clock is a photo of my great uncle’s clock which he won at the 1908 Bloomsburg Fair in Pennsylvania.  It’s sitting on a photo of my grandmother’s tatting.

My poem is inspired from a writing on Taylor Mali's blog. I used the "I Remembered" prompt to get started I had the
privilege of listening to his talk last night, "Debt of Memory."  It was exactly what I needed, especially the term "augmented memory.'

I Remembered

The American Mantle Clock
chimed during family dinners

Great-uncle Jim’s prize,
won at the 1908 Bloomsburg Fair

Traveled from the Pennsylvania woods
to the California high desert in the 40’s

Perched atop the handcrafted china closet,
feather dusted by many young hands

I raced the clock to finish,
diagramming sentences before the hour

of gloaming as the wheels and gears
of my mind spun stories in syncopated time
