 We're down under for Poetry Friday at Kat at Kathryn Apel. She's catching us up on all her adventures of the last few months. Are you interested in a poetry challenge? The September #poetrypals challenge is the Definito, created by poet Heidi Mordhorst, One thing I have done sporadically is to write short poems for Scot Gaelic translation. I rely on my first Gaelic teacher, Cam. And she sometimes checks with others. I wrote two in response to two photos I took in Scotland. Cam is very involved with The American Scottish Gaelic Society . She's been so kind to promote my little poems in their quarterly newsletter. It's Poetry Friday and Carmela at Teaching Authors has all the details for today's fabulous poems. At Teaching Authors, there's a sneak peak of a very cool poetry STEAM project and a poem from Imperfect II.
I have been able to sub in the fifth grade classes at my former school. These students are pretty special as they were first graders when I retired. Some of them were in my "Poetry Rocks" afterschool club. And when I've subbed during the last four years, they have had poetry lessons. I have watched them grow as poets.
These two classes did the Color Poem and Art project with a 4 x4 square of a monochromatic collage. It's been fun to bring in some of the papers I use in my art for the students to choose from for their project.

I felt like I was riding a bike with training wheels last Friday. I was asked to sub for a teacher at my former school. The last time I subbed for this teacher it was in first grade. He now teaches fifth grade. Many of his first graders are in his class and were they excited to know that we would write poems.
I decided to try Ekphratic poems. Using the photo fromMargaret's post and Lee Bennet Hopkins book, WORLD MAKE WAY: New Poems Inspired by Art from the Metropolitan Museum, and a couple of my own photos, we dove it. I shared Irene Latham's "This is the Hour" from the book and Lee Bennet Hopkins poem and "Endgame". We also talked about what we noticed on the Dragonfly wing photo as well as the two photos below. I then provided some scaffolding for creating a poem and let the students choose. Students took to the "Why" poem format that Margaret recently used with students 
Cooper asked to write his own poem after he wrote one for one of the photos. He said he wants to be a writer.
I think he understand line breaks.
I revised with students using Padlet. Did you know that you can print from Padlet? That was my new learning last week.
Xavier wanted to write his own poem. He and I worked together as he read his poem as I wrote it down. Please note: Ellie's poem needs a revision but I have not heard back on a couple questions I have for her. This week, Jama at Jama's Alphabet Soup is hosting our weekly poetic potluck. THINGS WE DO, Edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong Zooms into the World I am thrilled to announce the arrival of THINGS WE DO, edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong into the world on October 21, 2021. And I am fortunate to have a poem chosen. A little backstory: In August, I took a workshop with Syliva and Janet about putting together anthologies. There was a lot of interest in more in depth learning about creating an anthology. That’s when the brilliant Janet and Sylvia came up with a follow up workshop with a goal, an opportunity to create a fundraiser for the IBBY Children in Crisis Fund. "More and more clearly, I came to realize that I must not look backward, but to the future ~Jella Lepman, Founder of IBBY Those in the class were tasked to submit three Ekphrastic poems based on things we do, a perfect PreK themed book. From there, feedback was given and Sylvia and Janet selected the poems to represent the different activities. I will be the first to admit that writing to a prompt is a challenge. The prompt pushed me to play and just submit. Thanks to Janet’s and Sylvia’s feedback and direction, my poem “Zoom” was selected. Please "zoom" over to the link below to purchase this new title. All proceeds are going to IBBY Children in Crisis Fund, a fund that provides support to children whose lives have been disrupted through war, civil disorder or natural disaster. In addition to THINGS WE DO, Janet’s book GOOD LUCK GOLD AND MORE were both selected as "Hot Off the Press" books for October by the Children's Book Council.
