2024 National Poetry Month Saturday Matinee, Featuring the Work of Texas Women's University Students4/6/2024
, I've been teaching a poetry for children and young adults to MLIS students at TWU . It's my second year doing so. Thanks to the venerable Dr. Sylvia Vardell, who taught before me, I have had excellent curriculum to use.
For their midterm, students are asked to create a video of a poem which several poetry friends have donated. Originally, I was to teach for just a year and then last fall, I was asked to return and teach. The class was returned to the program. Because of the late notice, I have only had ten students this year. They are a wonderful dedicated group. You know how I love featuring student work of all ages, Today I am featuring Sea Dance by Theresa Gaughan created by Miranda F. and Grape by Sandy Brehl created by Alisha G.
"Sea Dance" written by Theresa Gaughan, created by Miranda F.
"Grape" written by Sandy Brehl, video created by Alisha G.

Jone, these poems and videos are beautiful! I always loved when Silvya would show her students videos. In Sea Dance the visuals and sounds put me right at the beach. I thought Miranda did a great job reading! I love how Miranda included the poem as a whole at the end and didn't read too fast. Great job! Now, I long for the ocean more than I did before I saw the video. :)

Jone, I love the line in Grape about drips of something down your chin. A cute poem and a cute video to show the poem. Alisha did a nice job reading, making it sound like a great read aloud poem to do with young children where they could yell out grape and maybe memorize the lines. Good photos and bright colors around the word grape. I like how Alisha put the poem at the end as a whole. Well done. Thank you for sharing both presentations.

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun making this video for such a great poem. I actually thought of children saying the word "grape" as I was making this. It would make a fun refrain reading with a class. Your post really made my day!

Oh Theresa I love your poem and the beautiful video that Jone's student Miranda created. I want to learn how to do it!! All is wonderful and I am enamored by the sea and my memories of growing up near the ocean and sound on Long Island. I thought this was a spectacular presentation and one I would want to share with my students if I was still teaching. Congratulations to Miranda for her lovely creation!

Oh Sandy's poem was brought to life so beautifully by Alisha. I would love to know how long it takes to create the videos once the poem is selected. The repetition of GRAPE ! in the poem and the way Alisha shows it on the green screen is so clever. All of it makes me want to go and buy some grapes right now. Another fabulous video. You should be so proud Jone to carry on Sylvia's lessons and bring more of these to teachers who might like to use them in class. I love them!

Thank you for the amazingly kind words. Canva is a really fun and creative way to make many different things. This was my first video to create in Canva, but it won't be my last! As for the time it took to make it, it felt like less than what it probably actually took because it was so much fun to create. 4/7/2024 10:58:42 am
These are great! I always enjoy seeing what those talented students come up with. Kudos to Miranda and Alisha.

I'm so enjoying the various comments about this projects, and the poems and their creative video designers. Poetry, even a few lines, connects us all! Thank you all, and especially you, Jone! 4/10/2024 10:11:05 am

Jone, the poem and background visuals are a great pairing. This project is a creative venture for your students. I would love to learn how to create a video poem like these. Kudos to all! Comments are closed.
