Linda at A Word Edgewise is hosting Poetry Friday this week. She is offering a "Clunker Exchange" where you take one for her lines and you leave one.
Last month, I asked for favorite pets and poems. I know that that is a big ask. I know that one day it is this poet and poem and the next day it might be another. That said, here's to those who offer a suggestion. Winner of a Copy of Ruptured by Joanne Rossmassler Fritz

Joanne Rossmassler Fritz generously offered a personalized signed copy of Ruptured.
That winner is Melanie Dulaney! Please email me your snail mail address at macrush53 at yahoo dot com. |
Jone, this slide show is fabulous! I so enjoy seeing what's behind the curtain--why other people have selected a poem. Like Denise, today it's one favorite poem, tomorrow it will be another. It depends, I think, on the weather of our soul--do we need an umbrella or a sunhat?
I'm adding my favorite line: "As you set out for Ithaka" It's my favorite because it was one poem that awakened me to the possibility of poetry at a time when I was becoming my true self as a young woman not dependent on parents or spouse. I was living in Greece and had the whole world to discover. Listening to a woman named Georgia read this poem was a lightening bolt moment in my life.
I think my favorite is different depending on who it is for and the context, like "Seal Lullaby" by Kipling is my favorite if you need a lullaby. This morning it is "Bach Winter" by Jane Mead. It's not winter, but music is on my mind! Poetry is for every mood :)
Jone, I apologize for not sending you a poem! I have a real problem with picking my favorite anything! I love the selections that people sent. Thank you for creating this collection and sharing!
Such a wonderful compilation, Jone. Thanks for sharing it!
Jone, This is a wonderful list of poems and favorite lines with the reasons the submitters love them. I know I've grown in my poetry knowledge because I recognized quite a few of them. I wish I had seen the call - but then again, I don't know what I would have picked. I am partial to the Carl Sandburg poem that Janice submitted though. I love the slide show - what a great way to share! You are very creative!
The diversity of choices sings proudly of poetry's vast terrain, Jone. Your efforts to share these poetic preferences is to be applauded. Well done you.
Thanks for sharing the slides, Jone! I try to read poems every day and I usually write down the titles and sometimes favorite lines, but I think I will try to make that a more regular practice. You've inspired me!
What a wonderful compilation. People's reasons for their choices are as engaging as the lines of poetry themselves!
I love Naomi Shihab Nye, but I hadn't read Gate A-4, so thank you so much for introducing me to this poem. What a POEM! It made me cry.
Oh, Jone, what a lovely collection of favorites in your slide show! So hard to pick a favorite, isn't it? I missed PF last week (flooding and all!) but I'm grateful for those who shared. What a joy of a post!
Jone, thank you for compiling and sharing our favorite poems. This was very fun to read and enjoy so many favorites. Your poem Gate A-4 is another of my favorites. "This is the world I want to live in. The shared world."
So many great poems. Thanks for asking.
You asked and many wonderfully generous poets answered! I'm a Sandburg fan, so I'm with Janice on her choice, but now I have a few new-to-me poems to explore. Yay! Thanks for thinking to ask, Jone. Who's your poet/poem?
Bridget, Read slide 10 to find my favorite poet or one of them
Jone, thank you for this great slide show of everyone's favorite poem! I enjoyed finding out why the poem was their favorite. Now, I have some new poems to read over and over, which is great. What a great idea, Jone! Thank you, for taking the time to do this project, for your inspiration, and for all the inspiration in everyone's responses.
I too appreciate reading the reasons for the poem selections, they are like a small window onto the poet’s thoughts, thanks for asking all of us, organizing, and sharing all!
