Janice at Salt City Verse is hosting us today. She is sharing some pretty wonderful new releases.
This week, I finally was able to teach the poetry lesson I planned for the end of March and ended up having to cancel my sub job due to an illness. It was a combination of creating a collage of the student's hand and then writing "I Am" poems. FYI, this is a class with 16 boys and 7 girls.

“I believe all capybaras are stinky” is the perfect line to start my day! What great poems, Jone. I’m impressed by these students’ poetry skills.

"I want to see the world. I worry I might do it alone." makes my heart ache. Such adult feelings in these young children. This form is one I've used myself in Bayou Song and have led at NCTE and Fay B. Kaigler. It always yields a satisfying poem. I want to know more about the hand craft. Thanks!

Thank you for this chorus of "I Am"s! Some wonderful words and feelings shared here. I love the variety of animals. And the inclusion of the "worry" line gives a real glimpse into children's lives. xo

Jone, these poems really took me into the hearts of these kids, and make it clear all their worries about the future. I want to share these with my family. I hope you are well again and taking good care of yourself.

Ah, "I am" poems feel always revealing, love that you had the students write from their lives, their imaginations, Jone. And I love those handprints!

Jone, thank you for sharing this wonderful project! The poems have great detail and are heartfelt. I love hearing about their dreams, worries, and believes. I'm glad that you were able to finish the project with them. I love your idea of having them trace their hands and collage their hands. I always saved calendars and magazines for my poetry classes, too. I miss working with kids; I really enjoyed these. I'm curious did the children mount their hand and poem on a piece of construction paper? Also, does "I Am" come from a poem in a certain poetry book? Thank you for sharing the photos and poems. :)

Oh, WOW! Jone...these are fantastic. I love the collage and how it led to poetry. So many good lines by the kids...funny lines, happy lines and then, "I worry about money." Yikes. The truth sings in these. What fortunate students...and fortunate us for getting to be an audience. What great poets!

Jone, your poetry project is a hit with these young writers. They not only integrated art into their poetry but imagination and honest responses about themselves. (I worry about predators.) I also want to know more about your collage hand art. The end products are so striking. Thanks for the children's treats.

Oh, Jone, the kids' words have me smiling, laughing, tearing up. Just so good. There's nothing like a young writer. ❤️
