Poetry Friday, Week 30:  A Swap from Janet Clare Fagal

8/20/2021

Thanks to Carol at Apples in My Orchard for hosting today. She's talk about important poets.

Next week, Janet will be guest posting about what I sent to her for the Summer Poetry Swap.  It's her first time swapping and so glad she did.

Janet wrote a poem  inspired by Fran Haley's blog. She participates in a group's prompts and this one is the decima from Spain.
There are 10 lines with 8 syllables per line.
The rhyme scheme is ABBAACCDDC.

While I will try the decimal, today's not the day.  Instead another Golden Shovel:

Things to Do At the Tidepools

When at the tidepools, look
under the water’s surface for
Starfish returned from the sky. Turn over the driftwood
washed ashore last night. You might spy

barnacles looking for food. Walk along the sand for sea-glass
scrubbed and polished by the waves that sparkle green.

Besides the gorgeous poem that Janet wrote for me, she sent these two things.
A wonderful chapbook that I am savoring and the broadside by Taylor Mali, creator of the Metaphor Dice (which I have used). His poem nails my teaching style.

Jone, Your photos are gorgeous! Can you refer me to where I can get instructions for the Golden Shovel? I'm intrigued by it. I also want to try the decima. I like the line that includes "turn over the driftwood." Nice work! Thanks for participating in the round up today!

Hi Carol,
Nikki Grimes has written a few books using Golden Shovel poems. She did not invent it. You choose a line that speaks to you, and it is called a "striking line". You write the words vertically on the page on the right side and they end each line in your poem. In a Highlights Workshop I took a few years ago with Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Georgia Heard, she was our guest teacher via Skype. Here are two links to Today's Little Ditty. https://michellehbarnes.blogspot.com/2018/03/classroom-connections-with-nikki-grimes.htmlhttps://michellehbarnes.blogspot.com/2018/03/march-dmc-wrap-up-giveaway.html

To do them well is satisfying and I really like them. Hope you give them a try.

Lucky lucky you! That decima looks fun but its asymmetry bothers me! I wish I could read the Taylor Mali poem--can you find a link to it? Happy swapping!

Heidi,
Here is Taylor's poem from his website. I really love it and I think the broadside is beautifully done. https://taylormali.com/poems/undivided-attention/
Do you ever see Fran Haley's blog? I think she is quite the poet. Her prompts are often from Ethical ELA and I have this plan to let Fran be my mentor so that I find the prompt and see her effort then give it a go. I did not find this too hard to accomplish, and of course I wanted to do something as polished as I could for the swap with Jone, but alas, I was behind. I think it is my grandmother's middle name. So I have to say I enjoyed the decima. Worrh a bit more tries.

Oh how I love a Golden Shovel :-). I love how your poem is in dialogue with Janet's ... you both made me want to walk along a sandy beach, looking for sea glass. I agree with Linda - "starfish returned from the sky" is just gorgeous.

I had too much to do this summer but miss the swapping. Janet sent you special things; the poem is "you", Jone. And your response makes me remember those amazing tide pools I don't get to explore often enough!

Janet's poem is so sweeping and grand. And Jone, your poem is up close and in a small space, but just as grand. Whether poetry turns its lens wide or zooms in, you both gave me a "you are here too" feeling.

I love your golden shovel response poem Jone, especially the "starfish returned from the sky," and the gorgeous coastal image of yours. Thanks for sharing Janet's poem and swap gifts, I like that first line of her poem, "In the End It's All Poetry, Don't You Think?" great opening. Enjoy the treasures!
