![]() The full moon was on January 6, 2023. Early in the morning of January 8, I was walking the dog and caught this image (which Margaret Simon used for #thisphotowantstobeaphoto) This was my response as in 1953, it was a full moon the day of my birth. I decided to play with this #smallpoemjanuary as a Cascade poem. Below is the draft. Born on a Wolf Moon
Her pregnant mother watches The push and pull of moon phases A daughter born on a wolf moon She doesn't always follow the pack Reads the tidal charts instead Her pregnant mother watches Notices winter's silent sleep stirring Feels the tug of spring roots The push and pull of moon phases Her words becomes colors She enters a new decade A daughter born on a wolf moon © 2023, draft Jone Rush MacCulloch

What a great poem. I love the energy of all the movement: push and pull, tug of spring roots, watching. All a bit mysterious. Nice, Jone.

I also like your line "her words become colors," the whole poem is very mystical and magical, as is the image, thanks Jone!

Jone, one of the reasons I'm drawn to this form (and most of the ones that repeat lines) is the way they can become incantatory with the right word and line choices. That's how this one feels to me, that the push and pull of the moon phases are echoed in the rhythm and colors of the lines. Nice one!

Love the idea of all that involves "a mother's contemplation", Jone. You've shown it beautifully & that photo is gorgeous!

Jone, I've never heard of a cascade poem until this week, as you all shared your work. I think your's is beautiful - pregnancy is a special time and we assign meaning to all sorts of things during it. Thank you for sharing this.

Your photo inspired a poem for me a couple of weeks ago. It is spectacular. I love the cascade poem you wrote.

So many lovely lines in this poem. I particularly loved "Notices winter's silent sleep stirring."

Jone, I enjoyed this short poem when I saw it last week on Margaret's site; really love how you expanded it. The cascade form fits it well with the repeating lines/images. Beautiful, again!

Very mysterious, Jone! I believe the wolf moon idea is Celtic in origin? I was interesting seeing the form in tercets.

I echo others about the mystical feel of this one! And I love the way you evoked the waiting and watching of pregnancy. Lovely!
