Welcome to Poetry Friday. I am so glad you are here. As I write, it's winter solstice. Actually the exact time of the solstice is 10:27 PM (EST) or 7:27 PM (PST). It's also called the hibernal solstice.
It's been a day filled of solstice activities, starting with sunrise. In which I listened to my heart and took a risk that perhaps just 4.5 miles away at the top of an extinct lava dome, the weather might be clearer than the fog layer at my house.
My final stop for today was Leach Botanical Garden. It was a place to see winter in its glory, sip hot cider and paint a rock or two. One I left for placement in their rock garden and the other will be revealed early 2024 for my One Little Word. Now it's your turn. Please leave your links below.

Jone, what wonderful solstice adventures! I am glad that you decided to venture out to see that gorgeous sunrise. The grotto is fascinating, and Leach Botanical Garden offered up such wonderful winter surprises. Happy winter solstice! Thank you for sharing the sights of Oregon. 12/21/2023 05:11:22 pm
Of COURSE you answered the call of your heart, and adventure, and set out before sunrise, Jone - because you're JONE. :0) Thank you for taking us along - beautiful words in response to such stunning surroundings. And such a meaningful way to mark the Solstice. Thanks for all, and thanks for hosting - Happiest of holidays to you both! xo 12/21/2023 05:47:21 pm
Sunrise is surely singing your poem and pic Jone, both gorgeous, and well worth your early rise! Leach Botanical Garden looks lovely, thanks for taking us there. Did you walk across that high bridge? Thanks for all and for hosting the Roundup–Happy Solstice! 12/21/2023 06:13:28 pm

Beautiful photo and poem, Jone. "sunrise sings" captures the experience perfectly and fits in well with the Berry line. I admire your search for light and am looking forward to your OLW reveal. Thanks for hosting and have a wonderful holiday!

Sigh...what a perfect Solstice post. The dark, the light, the making friends with both...answering the call. It's all so beautiful and all so Jone. Thank you for sharing your solstice gems with us. That sunrise photo is spectacular! And, I love how everything hinges on your word, "Instead." It's such a simple word...but look what it does in your poem.

Hi Jone! I didn't get my act together and post this week, but I wanted to mention that the Winter Solstice in Gaidhlig is Oidhche nan Seachd Suipearan (Night of the Seven Suppers). It's dark for sooo long that you could eat a bunch of times. (Sort of makes Scots people sound like hobbits. First breakfast, second breakfast...)

Thank you for reminding me of the Gaelic word. Which needs to be a poem. Night of the Seven Suppers is almost like the Supper of the Seven Fish in Italy.

Jone, that sunrise is glorious! And the "upper" grotto? How cool. I'd love to see pics of the rock garden and look forward to learning your One Little Word for 2024. Thank you for hosting and for all you give. xo 12/22/2023 05:10:31 am
I'm sorry, but I forgot to comment last night, Jone. Your post is a lovely welcome to winter, where we relish the sunsets as you have and find ways to enjoy the nights. I love the idea of the dawn tapping your shoulder and whispering! Happy Solstice! 12/22/2023 05:19:35 am
Jone, Happy Winter Solstice. What glories you share here. I am adoring Dawn and Sunrise as characters in your peaceful and hopeful poem. You inspire. Happy New Year and all things light to you and yours. Thank you for hosting. xo, a. 12/22/2023 05:25:45 am
Indeed the dark does sing and bloom! Berry’s words offered a perfect jumping off point for your golden shovel. T hank you for sharing your solstice with us, Jone. 12/22/2023 06:42:39 am
Beautiful photos! There was a beautiful sunset here too last night, but it was not great for photos because we were in an urban area. :(

Jone, what a delightful day you had. I love the images of the Upper Grotto you shared. So peaceful. And that sunrise above the fog--what a journey worth the drive! I love the image of the "Mist blooms" in your poem. How rich! 12/22/2023 08:43:45 pm
Jone, after a long day, I finally had time to finish the post I started earlier. I am in awe of your Winter Solstice celebration. It appeared to be a joyful day for you and your husband. The sunrise you witnessed is absolutely gorgeous and the poem a true tribute."sunrise sings"- Indeed! May your holiday be filled with additional joy. 12/26/2023 10:43:55 am
What a beautiful place, one unknown to me. I've been away, so am responding late. The sunset you shared is just like the sunset photos I took visiting my son in California, with the red sky. Looking forward to your one little word reveal. Happy Holidays! 12/30/2023 06:01:50 am
Hi Sunrise Sister Jone, This eloquent heart-tug image & poem of leaving home comfort for perhaps somethingthat doesn't work out, reminds me of when my hubby & I sought out the sunrise over the Atlantic the first weekend of December during a recurring visit to Mayo Clinic in North Florida [ But unlike creative you, I didn't come up with a poem, but have lots of smiles in our selfie & clicks of the dawn.]
